Lori Michalec Teacher of the Year in Ohio
The daughter of our Florida Geezer, Jimbo Fish, has been voted as the Teacher of the Year in the State of Ohio.
She is an English/American Literature teacher at Tallmadge Sr High School. Quite an accomplishment.
Good job Lori. We will have more pics posted on our PHOTOS Link soon.
Geezers Nite Out - The Firehouse at The Circle - Tallmadge
The last time we met at The Firehouse I was there early. Around 3:30 PM. Most of the Geezer regularly show up anytime from 4:30 to 5:00.
On September 17, I had a dentist appointment up the street at 2:00. After my appointment I went to the store, and then to the Firehouse. That was why I was there early that time. Last Wednesday, 10/1, I was over at my former residence getting it ready for Stanley Steemer to come, and clean the carpet. I am in the process of selling it. That is why I showed up later, around 7:00 PM.
Spike, S. B., R. B., and Billy Bob were the only Geezers there when I arrived. No Fergie, Drumstir or Forester. In defense of those who were not there, I didn't have time to put the SCHEDULE for October 2014 onto the website. It is there now.
The bartenders at the Firehouse for Wednesday nite were the same three that were there on Sep 17 with the exception of Brittany. She was not there the last time we were there. Her sister Courtney was there. Besides Brittany there was Tracey, Casey, and Shannon. Casey and Shannon are also sisters. But you couldn't tell by looking at them.
Go to our PHOTOS link to see pictures of the girls and an interesting happening with R. B.
We talked about our annual trip to Florida in February to meet with snowbirds, and watch the Super Bowl. Billy Bob was advising us that there were some direct flights available from Akron Canton, round trip, on Southwest for $216. R. B., our Entertainment Director is in charge of booking it. It's not actually that far away. Hard to believe!
Most of us ate from the excellent MENU at the Firehouse..My dentist also had a connection with this visit to the Firehouse as was the last time that we were there.
I went back to him again, this time, the Tuesday before GNO. but I was still having some pain. I wear two partials. Since I still had some discomfort I needed to eat something soft. (I know. Too much info) I ordered a Ham, Cheese, and Egg Hoagie without the bread. It comes with fries, but I also ordered mashed potatoes. Not many places have them. Their kitchen staff created an Omelette for me. There are some pics on the PHOTOS link.
We did see a Celebrity Look-A-Like at the Firehouse. It was a guy sitting in a booth in the corner of the room who I thought looked a lot like Marlon Brando (From the side).
Next Wednesday, October 8, we will be at another one of our fave stops, Johnny J's Pub & Grille in Springfield. Free Fries at the bar, Half Price Appetizers, and $3 Martini Nite.
Geezers Nite Out - Johnny J's Pub & Grille -Springfield
Again, I was late in arriving, sometime after 6:00 PM for a GNO. Most of the Geezers arrive anywhere between 4:30 and 5:00 on meeting nites which we refer to as "4:35"!. I was back at my Penguin condo again making a few finishing touches to the place which is now on the Market to sell. As most of you know by now I moved to the West side of town, and I am selling the condo that I lived in for quite some time in south Akron.
When I finally did arrive Spike, R. B., and Fergie were sitting at the bar with our good friend Krisko. S. B. was there, but he was standing near the bar behind them as I ended up doing. Eventually two people left the bar next to Fergie, and S. B. and I moved into those seats. Billy Bob came shortly afterward, and he ended up eventually sitting next to Spike. We always sit at the bar wherever we go unless there are no seats. But at Johnny J's they off Free fries to those who sit at the bar.
I was told that The Jerry of Jerry's Corner on our website was there before I was. I was sorry I missed him. I wanted to talk to him about his successful Las Vegas trip.
It was very crowded when I arrived. On Wednesdays JJ's offers 1/2 off of Appetizers, and $3 Martinis. This is a big draw in this day and age of the present economy that we are in.
One of our topics of discussion is how the Stock Market jumped up a total of 274.83 points in one day. A record. And then the very next day it went down 334 points. As of the writing of this article the Dow is down 115.15 points as of the closing on Friday, October 10. Go figure.
Fergie, one of our Geezers Snowbirds, is heading to Florida for a few weeks with his wife, Brenda, for a "warm up" (No pun intended) for their winter hiatus in December.
We were also talking about our annual Florida trip to see Fergie, Spike, and our Florida Geezer, Jimbo. R. B., S. B. and I (Joebo) will be flying down to Tampa on January 29. We will be down there to visit the others who are there for the duration, and to watch the Super Bowl game out on the deck at Shephard's Beach Resort. We also plan on staying there. They have just remodeled the entire complex.
Our good friend, Krisko, was there celebrating her up and coming Retirement. She came to Goodyear from The Dunlop Tire Co in Buffalo, NY that was absorbed by Goodyear. She has since been outscored to InnoSource where she worked for quite some time. She previously took her pension from Goodyear, but she is now planning on leaving InnoSource at the end of October. Her good friend, Kay, who all of the Geezers know, is planning an outside (Of Goodyear) Happy Hour for Krisko. We will advise you of the time and date of that event.
Next Wednesday, October 22, we are scheduled to meet at Dietz's/Dusty's Landing in Portage Lakes.
WEEKEND OCTOBER 17 - 19, 2014
Road Trip - Horseshoe Casino - Cincinnati, OH
The Geezers will be traveling to Cincinnati, and Columbus, Ohio over the weekend to celebrate the Big 7-O B-Day of fellow Geezer, Drumstir (Denny Edwards) at the Horseshoe Casino.
Some of the Geezers arrived on Friday, October 17, and the rest, including Drumstir, will get down there early Saturday afternoon. Drumstir's B-Day was actually on October 11, but he celebrated it that day with family.
Last year, we did the same thing for me, Joebo, down in Columbus at the Hollywood Casino. We will be staying Saturday night in Cincinnati, and then drive up to Columbus on Sunday morning to watch the Cleveland Browns game with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
We will have pics, and an article about the trip, and another article about the Geezers Nite Out at Legends on October 15 when we return.
WEEKEND OCTOBER 17 - 19, 2014 UPDATE
The Geezers have returned from their weekend trip to Cincinnati, and Columbus for the celebration of the 70th B-Day of Drumstir (Denny Edwards).
We will have a Special Newsletter with Photos on our MEDIA page shortly. Please Check Back in a day or two if it has not been published when you look for it.
Geezers Nite Out - Legends Sports Pub & Grille - Green
As usual, when we meet at Legends, a lot was happening on this Wednesday.
The day before,10/14, a nurse from Akron who worked at the Dallas hospital where the first Ebola patient was being treated, and came down with the disease herself, spent about 5 days in the Akron/Tallmadge area. A nurse who she worked with had also been infected with the dreaded disease. Needless, to say, there was a bit of tension in the air over this revelation. I was expecting a small turnout for our meeting.
S. B. eventually showed up after expressing doubt of whether he should go out in public. Drumstir, who had celebrated his B-Day on Oct 11 with gusto, indicated that he was not going to go out either. He did, however, wander in after some of us were already there. Of course Fergie is in Florida for a month for a warm-up for his winter hiatus down in Clearwater.. I (Joebo) gave Drumstir two $5 Ohio Instant Lottery tickets. He won $50 on one, and $20 on the other one. He also had a ticket from someone else that was a $5 winner. So he collected $75 Wednesday nite from the Ohio Lottery.
It ended up being a good turnout of Geezers after all. And as the evening progressed a good crowd showed up in the restaurant area.
When the Forester walked in, Spike's wife, Kathy, was walking right behind him. We usually do not have any of the wives of girlfriends show up, but Kathy was at the doctor nearby so she stopped in for a drink. Sometimes after going to the doctor you need that.
We were watching a pre season Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game with the Indiana Pacers. It is hard to believe that baseball is over except for the World Series, and that basketball and hockey are just around the corner.
Speaking of World Series it was on this nite that the Kansas City Royals clinched a spot in the Annual October Classic. Kansas City has set a Major League record by winning their first 8 games in the playoffs. They also have 12 straight wins since the end of the season which is one away from another Major League record. Who would have figure that? No wonder the Cleveland Indians couldn't beat them. And neither could any other American League team.
The food special Wednesday was Half-Priced Appetizers. Most of us took advantage of it.
Spike had the Chicken Tenders, Drumstir had one Min Burger, which was actually a Kids' Meal. Billy Bob chose the Turkey Club Burger. That is quite a combo. And I had something different this time. It was the Teriyaki Veggie Wrap with Chicken. It was very good, and not too spicy.
Go to our PHOTOS page to see pics of the food, Tricia, Drumstir and others.
Next Wednesday, Oct 22, we are scheduled to meet at Dietz's/Dusty's Landing on Portage Lakes.
Geezers Nite Out - Houston Pub Hall - Norton, OH
The Geezers Nite Out last Wednesday nite, was a Halloween Party with two different bands playing at the Houston Pub Hall in Norton. The Phantom Band (Geezers Band), and the Legends Band put on a show for a "packed house" last Wednesday.
There was a good turn out of friends of the Geezers, and friends of the two bands, and of the Houston Pub.
The bands each played a set for about an hour with the Phantom Band up first. Then The very popular Legends Band also did the same thing. After a short break both bands took to the stage together, and jammed until 10:00 PM the end of the show,.
The Phantom Band had a guest sit in on the harmonica that their drummer "Big Daddy" Minier knows from when he worked at Goodyear. His name is Victor Head, a pipefitter, and harmonica player extraordinaire. He has played in many bands, and he is currently with the Howard Street Blues Band.
The Legends Band provided all of the PA equipment using a dy-no-mite Bose system that even made the Phantoms sound good. We want to thank them for that. The Phantom Band provided their talent, and all of the table favors such as theater style popcorn, candy corn, orange napkins and cups.
There were enough people in the crowd who came in costume for us to hold a Halloween Costume contest. There were five winners, and one Grand Prize Winner. The Houston Pub provided gift certificates of food and drink for whne they returned there, and Bob Adamov, Author, donated four personally autograph books that he wrote about the mysteries of Put-N-Bay as trivia contest prizes and for the Grand Prize winners of the costume contest.
All in all it was a good night. It looked like everyone was having a good time. That's all that matters.
We will have pictures from the night taken by Bob Swisher posted on the MEDIA page soon.
Our Entertainment Director, R. B., held a vote for meeting places for November even with all of the commotio going on. The result of that vote have been posted on the SCHEDULE page.
